The 10th Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema - Mumbai, aims at introducing Osian's Cinefan to Mumbaikars. Instituted in 2007, this event samples the best of cinema to be shown at the festival in Delhi as well as provide audiences in Bombay with a flavour of the multi-arts and cross-cultural ethos of Cinefan through the CARD exhibitions and the IBM² discussion panels. The event is aimed as a step towards providing Mumbai with a more comprehensive film festival and film culture than what exists now. It is indeed an irony that India loves cinema but does not yet have a full-blown film culture or infrastructure that does justice to this excitement that Indians have about the medium. The event as a rule tries to tie in the history of cinema with contemporary trends through films, exhibitions and discussion panels as well as by honoring each year the doyens of the medium. Last year we felicitated the eminent theatre and arts infrastructure builder Ebrahim Alkazi, the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, and the master film publicity designers Diwakar Karkare and D.R. Bhosle. This year we pay tribute to one of the best loved actors of Indian cinema, Shammi Kapoor.
The OCFF 10 Mumbai is as a rule designed as a sampler for what's going to be up at the Osianama in a year's time. The Osianama will host many film festivals through the year but always in dialogue with the other arts. The main emphasis of the Mumbai event is to emphasize the crosslinkages between the various arts with cinema drawing upon all existing art forms for its energies and creativity. No such event or institution exists at the moment in Mumbai or in India that brings together such connectivity among the arts and between cinema and its neighboring artistic practices in such a comprehensive manner and on such a substantial scale. The Mumbai event is a build-up to cultural extravaganza and cultural events that the Osianama will be where Mumbaikars and visitors from all over the world will be treated to a continuous flow of cinema, art, performance and pedagogy through the year. The Osian's Cinefan festival itself will come to Mumbai once Osian's flagship cultural complex - The Osianama opens in 2009.
