Mr. Shi, a Chinese widower, decides to travel to the United States to see his estranged daughter for the first time in over a decade. She has recently divorced and he intends to help her overcome her trauma. Their time together is awkward at first. His daughter starts avoiding him when he insists on knowing the reasons for her divorce. They see each other only at dinner when he cooks for her. Shi spends his days taking in the strange culture, improving his language skills, and making a friend in an Iranian woman. His persistent attempts to bond with his daughter lead to some buried issues bursting forth between the pair. This small-scale work of great emotional resonance represents Wayne Wang’s return to the low-budget filmmaking that made him a leader of the American independent film movement of the 1980s – 90s.
