Narrative in Film
Time: 9:30 am- 11:00 am
Date:  July 15 2008
Venue: AF

In this session Nick Deocampo will illustrate the different kinds of narrative structures in films as well as the elements that differentiate them from one another. He will investigate how the narrative elements of ‘story’ and ‘discourse’ are appropriated by mainstream cinema to ‘speak’ in a film language that mimics the dominant ideology giving order to society’s sense of ‘reality’. Basic film texts viewed and discussed will include Akira Kurosawa’s Rashomon and Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane. Contemporary films with non-linear formats will also be discussed like Run, Lola, Run and Babel. Other narrativities will also be explored including films of Chantal Akerman, films of “non-event.”
